Fire Prevention For Kids
By Dave Sherwin of Escape The Matrix LLC
Yesterday I took my nine year old boy to the Fire Station as part of his Cub Scout requirements. And no, I'm not bummed that he got to sit in the Engine and I didn't. Really. Anyway, even though we dropped in unannounced, a very friendly and helpful fireman took us on a great tour, and taught/ reminded us some great fire safety tips: 1. Never play with matches. And why is it that boys seem to have this problem, but girls don't? What is it about fire that fascinates boys? 2. If you do happen to catch yourself on fire when you're breaking rule number one, don't run off the mountain like some Lord Of The Rings Steward, instead, consider stopping, dropping, and rolling. 3. Check the batteries in your home fire detectors. This is especially fun to do by lifting your kids up there and letting them push the button. It not only gets them involved in the process of fire prevention, it gives you a small sadistic thrill to see them jump when that super loud alarm goes off. 4. If the alarms do go off in your house, feel closed doors with the back of your hand before opening them. If they're hot, don't open them unless you want to become that Lord Of The Rings image. 5. If there really is a fire in your home, crawl to stay below the smoke. 6. Gather all inhabitants once outside, and keep them together! Firemen have died trying to rescue kids who weren't even in the house, but were outside playing. 7. Practice fire drills in your home. If you don't, in the event of a real fire, you may forget to stop, drop, roll, crawl, feel, test, or escape. I hope this intel helps you or your loved ones to not die.

Some really good safety reminders.
Nice work. Important info but with a comical edge I thought: "If you do happen to catch yourself on fire..." Made me chuckle anyway.
Thank you for sharing these valuable fire safety tips for children, Dave. Every home should shut off the electronics, on the first Sunday of every month at 11 AM to go over these with their children. Keep up the good work. Best wishes. Frederick
